16 is one of those "big deal" birthdays when you are finally old enough to date. Our family has a tradition that for our daughters 16th birthday she gets a ruby ring along with a poem written by my Aunt Debbie and a copy of the scripture from Proverbs 31:10 "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies." All in hopes of helping them to remember who they are and what their future can hold. I also wanted to take pictures of Kyrsten in front of the Temple. So I called my sweet sister-in-law Mindi and asked for her help (she is much more talented than I am and I knew she would do a wonderful job.) We were so excited about how they turned out! Thanks Mindi!
Here is what the poem looks like...what a beautiful gift to our daughters, Thanks Aunt Debbie!
To Our Daughter,
It’s a precious stone we give this day,
To a beautiful daughter on her way,
To becoming the woman she’ll someday be.
Through her Father in Heaven, her destiny she’ll see.
He’s sent you with a gift, far greater than this ring,
The beautiful gift of his spirit children to bring.
With an eternal partner by your side,
A family you’ll love and raise with pride.
Now is the time to prove your worth,
Times of trial and spiritual birth.
To treasure this gift, Father in Heaven has given you;
You must keep yourself pure and clean and new.
If ever a one should try and tempt Heavenly Father’s gift away
Quickly part with your ruby ring and say:
“It’s value is so little to compare
With virtue, a gift so noble and rare!”
That special person you may have known before,
Will someday come knocking at your door.
And when he does you’ll want to say:
“Through Temple doors, I can follow you this day!”
Our greatest wish for you on your 16th birthday;
Is that this ruby ring will shine that way,
To a righteous life, with a worthy man,
And an onward striving for the eternal plan.
